1. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
OPC is the most widely used cement in the world. It is classified into three grades based on its compressive strength after 28 days:
33 Grade: Used for small-scale plastering and non-structural works where high strength is not required.
43 Grade: The "all-rounder." Used for general RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) works, brickwork, and pre-cast items like blocks and pipes.
53 Grade: High-strength cement. Used for heavy-duty structures like multi-story buildings, bridges, and prestressed concrete.
2. Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)
PPC is made by grinding OPC clinkers with pozzolanic materials (like Fly Ash or volcanic ash). It is highly popular today due to its durability.
Uses:
Marine structures (piers, dams, and docks) because it resists sulfate attacks.
Residential construction (plastering and masonry).
Hydraulic structures where water tightness is important.
Advantages: It is cheaper than OPC, produces less heat, and is more environmentally friendly.
3. Rapid Hardening Cement
This cement attains high strength in the early stages (usually in 3 days, it reaches the strength that OPC reaches in 7 days). It has a higher percentage of Tricalcium Silicate ($C_3S$) and is ground very finely.
Uses:
Road Repairs: When you cannot keep a road closed for a long time.
Cold Weather Concreting: Since it generates heat quickly, it prevents the water from freezing.
Pre-cast Construction: It allows for the early removal of formwork (shuttering), speeding up the project.
4. Low Heat Cement
This cement is designed to produce very little heat during the hydration process. It contains less $C_3A$ and $C_3S$, and more $Dicalcium Silicate$ ($C_2S$).
Uses:
Mass Concreting: Essential for huge structures like Dams, bridge abutments, and retaining walls.
Thick Foundations: In very thick slabs, if the heat cannot escape, the concrete will crack. Low Heat cement prevents these "thermal cracks."
