Field & Lab Tests on Cement
Field & Lab Tests on Cement: Color test, Fineness test, Setting time (Initial & Final), aur Soundness test
1. Field Tests (Quick Site Check)
Before sending cement to the lab, an engineer performs these quick checks:
Color Test: Cement should have a uniform greenish-gray color. An uneven color indicates impurities.
Physical Property: When you put your hand in a cement bag, it should feel cool. If it feels warm, hydration has already started.
Float Test: A small amount of cement thrown into a bucket of water should float for a while before sinking.
Lump Test: There should be no hard lumps in the bag. Lumps mean the cement has absorbed moisture from the air.
2. Fineness Test (Lab)
Fineness determines the rate of hydration and how fast the cement gains strength.
Sieve Method: 100g of cement is sieved through a 90-micron (No. 9) sieve for 15 minutes.
Limit: For OPC, the weight of residue (leftover) should not exceed 10%.
Air Permeability Method (Blaine's): Measures the "Specific Surface Area." For OPC, it should be at least $2250\text{ cm}^2/\text{g}$.
3. Setting Time Test (Lab)
This is done using the Vicat Apparatus. It tells us how long the concrete remains plastic (workable).
Standard Consistency ($P$): First, we find the water required to allow a Vicat plunger to penetrate 33-35 mm.
Initial Setting Time: Water added is $0.85P$. It is the time when the 1mm needle stops penetrating 5-7 mm from the bottom.
Requirement: Minimum 30 minutes for OPC.
Final Setting Time: The time when the needle makes an impression but the circular attachment fails to do so.
Requirement: Maximum 600 minutes (10 hours) for OPC.
4. Soundness Test (Lab)
Soundness ensures that the cement does not undergo a large change in volume (expand) after it has set. If cement is "unsound," the structure will crack.
Le-Chatelier Method: Used to detect unsoundness due to Lime ($CaO$).
Process: The expansion should not exceed 10 mm for OPC.
Autoclave Test: Used to detect unsoundness due to both Lime and Magnesia ($MgO$).
Process: The expansion should not exceed 0.8%.
Summary Table for NTS Study
| Test | Equipment Used | Acceptance Criteria (OPC) |
| Fineness | 90 micron Sieve | $< 10\%$ residue |
| Initial Set | Vicat Apparatus | $> 30$ mins |
| Final Set | Vicat Apparatus | $< 600$ mins |
| Soundness | Le-Chatelier | $< 10$ mm |
