Pre-Construction & Surveying Phase 3: a)Equipment Check-up checklist

Pre-Construction & Surveying Phase 3: Equipment Check-up checklist

๐Ÿ—️a) Equipment Check-up checklist

As a Civil Engineer, your Calibration Certificates are your technical insurance. Whether you are working on a precise house plan or a complex structural analysis for your site, an uncalibrated instrument can lead to foundation shifts or boundary disputes.

Equipment Check-up checklist by nts study

Below is the professional checklist to verify your equipment’s health and the validity of its documentation.

๐Ÿ› ️ The "Three-Point" Certificate Validation

Before accepting any instrument from a service center, check the certificate for these three critical elements:

  1. Traceability: Does the certificate state that the master instrument used for testing is traceable to NABL or a national standard?

  2. Validity Period: Standard calibration for optical instruments is typically 1 year. However, for high-impact projects (bridges, dams, or high-rises), it is often required every 6 months.

  3. Unique Identification: The Serial Number on the certificate must match the physical plate on your Total Station or Auto-level exactly.

๐Ÿ“‹ Instrument-Specific Calibration Checklist

1. Total Station (TS)

  • [ ] Angular Accuracy: Verification of horizontal and vertical circles (e.g., 1", 2", or 5" accuracy).

  • [ ] EDM (Electronic Distance Measurement): Testing the distance error (standard is usually 2mm + 2ppm).

  • [ ] Laser Plummet: Ensure the laser or optical plummet is perfectly centered over the station point.

  • [ ] Tilt Sensor: Verification of the dual-axis compensator (Ensures the machine stays level even if slightly bumped).

2. Auto-Level / Digital Level

  • [ ] Collimation Error: This is the most common fix. The certificate should confirm a successful Two-Peg Test.

  • [ ] Compensator Check: Does the internal pendulum move freely to level the line of sight?

  • [ ] Circular Bubble: Is the physical bubble vial aligned with the internal horizontal plane?

3. Theodolite

  • [ ] Plate Level: Sensitivity check of the bubble tube for horizontal leveling.

  • [ ] Vertical Index Error: Ensuring the vertical circle reads exactly 90degree or 0 degree  when the telescope is horizontal.

  • [ ] Optical Plummet: Centering check to ensure the vertical axis passes through the ground station point.

๐Ÿ“‚ Site Calibration Log (Master Table)

Maintain this log in your site office to avoid using expired equipment during a layout or structural marking.

๐Ÿ’ก Pro-Tip for Engineer's:

Even with a valid certificate, transportation can de-calibrate an instrument. If your Auto-level travels in a bouncy tractor or JCB, always perform a quick "Field Check" on-site before starting a major layout.
