PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) Technical Checklist

🏗️ PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) Technical Checklist

1. Pre-PCC Preparation (Groundwork)

  • Surface Compaction: Ensure the soil or boulder soling is compacted using a plate compactor or roller. No loose pockets should remain.

  • Dewatering: The excavation pit must be free of water. If the water table is high, continuous dewatering is mandatory during pouring.

  • Anti-Termite Treatment (ATT): If specified, the soil must be treated with chemicals before laying the PCC.

  • Level Pegs: Install wooden or steel level pegs at 2-meter intervals to ensure a uniform finished surface.

    *

2. Material & Mix Proportions

  • Mix Grade: Generally M5, M7.5, or M10 (e.g., $1:3:6$ or $1:4:8$) as per the structural drawings.

  • Water-Cement (W/C) Ratio: Maintain between 0.45 to 0.50. Excess water reduces strength and causes "bleeding" (water rising to the surface).

  • Aggregate Size: Usually 20mm to 40mm graded aggregates. Ensure they are free from dust and organic matter.

  • Admixtures: If the PCC is for a water-retaining structure, check for the addition of waterproofing compounds.

3. Execution & Pouring

  • Thickness Verification: Measure the depth at various points. Standard PCC thickness for footings usually ranges from 75mm to 150mm.

  • Shuttering/Side Forms: Side supports must be rigid and aligned. Use thin wooden planks or MS channels to prevent the slurry from spreading.

  • Discharge Height: Do not drop concrete from a height of more than 1.5 meters to avoid segregation.

  • Compaction: Use a hand rammer or a light plate compactor. For thicker PCC (>150mm), a needle vibrator can be used briefly.

    *

4. Post-Pouring & Curing

  • Surface Finish: The top surface should be rough enough to provide a good bond for the RCC footing but leveled according to the pegs.

  • Curing: Start curing after 6–10 hours of pouring. The surface should be kept moist for at least 7 days using gunny bags or ponding.

  • Protection: Ensure no foot traffic or heavy machinery moves over the PCC for at least 24 hours.
