Excavation: Depth, width, and shoring/strutting for safety checklist

Excavation is one of the most high-risk phases in civil engineering

Here is your comprehensive checklist for Excavation, Shoring, and Strutting.

Excavation: Depth, width, and shoring/strutting for safety checklist

🏗️ Dimension & Depth Verification

  • [ ] Depth Control: Is the excavation depth monitored using an Auto-level to prevent "over-excavation"? (Filling over-excavated soil is never as strong as undisturbed soil).

  • [ ] Width Allowance: Is the width at least $300\text{--}600\text{mm}$ wider than the footing size to allow for shuttering (formwork) and worker movement?

  • [ ] Bottom Leveling: Is the bottom of the pit trimmed manually to a flat, horizontal surface before the PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) is poured?

  • [ ] Loose Soil Removal: Has all "slush" or loose rainwater-soaked soil been removed from the base?

🛡️Shoring & Strutting (Safety & Stability)

If you are digging deeper than 1.5 meters, lateral support is mandatory to prevent cave-ins.

  • [ ] Shoring Material: Are the timber planks or steel sheets free from cracks and decay?

  • [ ] Strut Spacing: Are the horizontal struts spaced according to the soil pressure calculations to prevent buckling?

  • [ ] Waling Alignment: Are the horizontal beams (walings) securely transferring the load from the shores to the struts?

  • [ ] Tightening: Are wedges used to ensure there is no gap between the soil face and the shoring?

⚠️Safety & Logistics Checklist

  • [ ] The "1-Meter" Rule: Is all excavated soil (spoil) kept at least 1 meter away from the edge of the pit to prevent it from falling back in?

  • [ ] Vibration Check: Are heavy vehicles or JCBs kept at a safe distance to avoid ground vibrations that could trigger a collapse?

  • [ ] Dewatering: Is there a pump ready in case of groundwater seepage or sudden rain?

  • [ ] Safe Access: Are ladders provided for every 15 meter of trench length for quick entry and exit?

TermHindi EquivalentDefinition

💡 Pro-Tip for Engineer's:

If you are working with Black Cotton soil, remember that it expands and exerts high lateral pressure on your shoring. In such cases, use "Close Shoring" (no gaps between planks) rather than "Open Shoring."
